They way our vault is structured, our engineers need access to the entire vault. What is preventing them from copying this data to a USB drive, or dropbox, and leaving with it?
I do not believe this is possible thru ePDM. If a user can read a file they can copy it.
A quick google search showed a couple programs that can encrypt your files, or prevent copy.
Sounds like something that needs to be handled at the network level, not the PDM level.
There must be some way to monitor who is placing files onto removeable media. Some workplaces have resorted to filling USB ports with glue.

Viewer able to copy out vault files?
Yeah, what Craig said
Do you know if you have an actual problem on this topic? Or is it just a security minded paranoia?
I was talking with another admin the other day about this and concluded:
The problem is if we do empty cache on log out, users who travel to customer site can't take large assmeblies to show, etc. And that does not prevent copying to local drive or flash or cloud storage. I will look for a tool to monitor USB traffic, but that does't help with cloud copies, or copying locallly to the laptop, then going home and copying it through their network.
I don't see how you can prevent that from happening through the software. This has always been an issue with people leaving one company to go to another. Even in the day when only hard copies of design existed the propietary information was still available to copy or steel. It is why most companies I have worked for have me sign a non-compete document which has expressed threats of maximum prosecution should I steal intellectual property.
What this really boils down to is that lack of trust we have with those working for us. Which is based on a culture that makes everything all right if it benefits you in any way. The lack of a moral foundation in the younger generation is a sad development in this once great country.
I will get off my soap box now.
P.S. we just let someone go becuase they possesed another companies intellectual property.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess the next question is if there is any type of logging. I am not worried about someone putting USB and taking data. What I am worried about is introducing an application like dropbox, and the next thing you know, they instal it on their home computer, and now our data is there, and then accidental installation at customer computer, and its there.. you know?
Can you encrypt the content somehow?
I am not aware of encryption availability. So the concern is the user sharing a folder to Dropbox or some other cloud technology. I have to admit, the concern may be valid but I don't know if that is even possible with EPDM virtual folders.
