I have an assembly with multiple parts that are the same. For example, I am using the same pulley multiple times. Whenever I try to suppress just 1 of the pulleys, SW instead suppress ALL the pulleys in the assembly. What is going on? This is frustrating.
This only started happening when I started using SW2014.
Yes, they are all the same sldprt file.
I know the difference between the hide and suppress buttons.
I need to suppress the part as I have different configurations. If I hide it, it will hide only that selected pulley instead of all of them.
I thought your issue was SolidWorks suppressing ALL the pulleys......
Different instances of the same sldprt file can be at different configurations in an assembly. Or are you trying to show different configurations of your assembly with the pulley in various locations?
I will hide part instances and exclude an instance from the BOM, both of which are configuration specific.
You have me a bit confused on what is not working for you. Can you post some pictures or maybe an example assembly?

Think of it as such. I have 3 configurations and 5 pulleys. I only want to show Pulley's 1, 2, 3, & 4 in the first configuration. However, when I go to suppress pulley 5 it suppresses pulleys 1-5. If I go to the properties and try to tell it to only suppress on specific configurations it just will not suppress the part at all.
Hide the pulley instances and exclude from BOM. That will be configuration specific. This is what I would do in the scenario you are describing.

That doesn't solve my problem though. I need it suppressed. I have a huge assembly and it'll take me forever to go through the BOM individually just took look for them. It used to be able to suppress my things before I switched to 2014.
I guess it would be best then to get with your SolidWorks reseller and log a bug report.

Is there are any relationship between pulley's 1-5? I mean pulleys 5 maybe parent for pully's 1-4.

I just checked in both SW2013 and SW2014 SP1 with surpressing a part instance. Only that instance was suppressed not all instances within the assembly. I was confused myself on how that worked. Sorry about that.... Late in the day here and my mind was a bit addled.
Can you post your pulley file for us to look at? Can you try setting up a new simple assembly just to test and see if you have the same behavior.

My initial query would be to ask if the pulleys happen to be inside a subassembly? If you have a pulley subassembly that exists 5 times in the main assembly and you suppress the pulley, you will actually be suppressing the pulley within the subassembly, such that all instances of that subassembly will have the pulley suppressed. This can happen especially easily if the pulley happens to be a downloaded purchased part. For example, if you download pneumatic component models from SMC, even if there is only a single part it will download as one part in an assembly.

Excellent point..... I was not giving good advice last night. Was tired and should have just stepped away from the computer. DOH!!!
We clean up SMC assemblies and only keep the sldprt. We also will do a Save As to a sldprt file on a lot of downloaded assemblies. Just to keep the file management easier and cleaner on COTS type parts.

How were these pulleys brought into the assembly? Were they each brought in and mated seperately, or was one brought in and mated and the others with a Linear, Circular, etc Pattern? If there is a pattern involved that would account for the problem. If you suppress a part that's patterned then the pattern will also be suppressed.
Also, how are you setting up the pulleys for the configurations? If you're activating configurations one at a time and suppressing parts, you might try a different method. Right-click on a part (or Ctrl+select multiple parts and right-click) and choose "Configure Component" from the drop-down. That will bring up a table where you can select which parts you want active for each configuration. You can also create new configurations with this table.
I just saw you've been a forum member for a year, so you probably already know about this method, but it may help someone else.
I went at it again today to take the suggestions from here. Here's what I got.
I have 1 subassembly that contains the pulley on a bracket. However, the other pulleys were all brought in individually, not as patterns. When I suppress the subassembly (pulley + bracket) then all the pulleys in the whole assembly suppress as well. However, if I suppress any of the other pulleys which are not part of a subassembly, then it only supresses that individual pulley.
That's just weird. I have no idea. Hopefully one of the many people here who are smarter than I am can figure it out.
Can you make a dumb assembly with pulley and brackets (may be their sub-assy too) to test.
You can remove all other components but make sure that dumb assy is showing the same behavior.
All the pulleys are the same sldprt file?
Are you sure you were not Hiding the part before?
When you Suppress it dumps the file out of memory and will supress all the instances loaded in SolidWorks.
Try Hiding your part.
