Best way to tackle this problem?

Hi,

I'm looking for the best way to attack this problem. I've been trying motion studies but have been finding the results to be very unrealistic. The images below show our machine in a tunnel. The rear of the machine is fixed in position while the front of the machine is propelled forward. As the machine enters the curve and hits the tunnel wall. We are trying to find the reaction forces along the beam as the machine enters the curve and hits the tunnel wall.

I haven't used motion studies on a model/problem this large before and maybe solidworks cannot properly handle this much contact. Any thoughts?

i don't think motion is going to be a good fit for this

what do you mean "along the beam"? do you mean the tube?

to check if motion works, why not simplify the problem down to a tube and a cylinder. you said you had previously used motion for smaller problems, how did you output the reactions there?

As you recommended I simplified the problem further and now the motion seems to be following the expected behavior. Unfortunately it chooses to partially ignore the contacts that ive set in some places. Even with the precise contact settings turned on. Shouldn't the assembly bind up and stop before travelling through contacts.

if you're pushing components together, contact will fail. consided that the software considers the parts as infinitely rigid. if you had a motor pushing 2 parts that were infinitely rigid together the motor would burn out. in simulation, the contacts start to break down and/or you start to get errors. in solidwork simulation, you'd start seeing deformations. note, you can play with some of the solver parameters to improve this case. see the solidworks kb at customerportal.solidworks.com to get more info on the solver options.
