Can someone help me flatten this part? I tried to conver to sheetmetal and it wouldnt find bends?
hei'ya Chris, followed your workflow, as close as pos, did it over a tablet,
so it was a bit labourious but should be useable? rebuild feature for feature-
checking the relations and referances that you have to set, l had to use
some poetic license, but nothing major- hope this helps- have a good'n - kelef
I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for or not. But you may want to give it a try. This way I was able to flatten your part.
Right click and delete Boss-Extrude1 feature in your feature tree. All feature and sketches will be deleted and your first sketch will stay in the tree. Edit this sketch as the following image. You have two lines in your sketch for your material thickness. Delete one of them. You must also add tangant relation between all your curved lines. your sketch will be something like this:
Now select sheet metal tab and from the ribbon click Base Flange/Tab button. Select your only sketch and edit the property of the base flange in property pane (Material Thickness - Bend Table - Bend R and .... )
you will have the following :
Test if your part is able to be flatten.
Add your other features, Extrude cuts and anything else you need to have the same result as the part posted above.
hei'ya Habib, your choice, seems to be the best with the kookey sketch that was
the sketch1, when you're right, you're right sir - - kelef
hei'ya Chris, maybe don't delete!,....., try moving the rollback bar to after BossExt1,
select convert to sheetmetal, from the sheet metal menu,
extend to width of part 10.? something,
move rollbar 1 feature at a time to rebuild, if there are errors,
and there will be, reset the relations and dimension points, and faces,
might be a better way than making all new-
hope this helps - kelef
I tried this method at first. But I received a message telling me conveting to sheetmetal needs a fixed face/edge error. Since the part is made of a spline, I wasn't able to select a face/edge. Were you able to convert it to sheetmetal after the first extrude?
If yos, which face did you select as the base face/edge?
Hei'ya Habib, zoom the feature to just show the sketched face, edge on and select,
then set the width, ignore/except the rads and auto functions- should be good?
of course the relations/faces are lost on further features but all the work is done
it just needs to be tidyed up with the dangling geometry- kelef
forgot a scrnshot

thanks. I wasn't able to follow you. But as you explained earlier, I tired to convert to sheetmetal after the first extude and checked Keep Body option in property manager.
This time the error message I was receiving is gone and it converted to sheetmetal without any problem.
Kelef, when you try to covert to sheetmetal what are you selecting for a fixed face? This is a customer model that I need to flatten to make a laser program. I would have drawn in sheetmetal if it was my model. I am trying to not have to re-create the features.
Kelef, found it, I was selecting the wrong side, looks like it may work, I'll keep you posted, Thanks!
hei'ya Chris, sorry am a bit busy for now, but depending on the base sketch it should be workable,
l'll take a look later, but if you need it urgent e-mail me and l'll do my best. - kelef
Got it converted but still wont flatten? Any advice? I attached the new model.
first guess would be the sketch, fully defined? or relations, l'll try to get some time
to go thru it, might take an hour or so to get back though- if that's any good m8
anytime this weekend is great, trying to get it for Monday, Thanks a bunch.
hei'ya Chris, l gotta get gone just now, but att. is the base that l changed to sm
copy paste/drag n'drop each feature and repair the relations, l'll see what l can
do before sunday morning, the sketch1 was a bit kookey, check it out, maybe
it will flatten with a better sketch, but still those pesky dangling geo's - kelef
Kelef, Great job! Do you know what was the problem from mine to yours that got it to unfold? I may have a few more of these in the future and it would be nice if I could figure them out.
Thanks, you have saved the day!
hey dude, be sure to check the geo and relations all that the customers brief entails,
l hashed it a bit, and sorry only just saw your tst file, l'll take a look at it now, but l think
the main problem was the sketch1, you need to have the correct relations and fully defined
for best predictable results, but l not that experienced myself- l'll get back to you - kelef
PS glad to help
