How to change parts from UNC to map pathing?

We recently had a file that gave the "already opened" dialog for each part instance in the assembly. One sub-assembly had the part as \\server\location\PD... and the other sub-assembly had the part as J:\PD..., same part, same location. It was easily fixed by changing references, but I'd like to know how this happened, to help prevent it in the future.

There's probably a good chance each sub-assembly was created on a diferent computer. But there's not a setting in SW for this, right?

Does anyone know how one file may have gotten the UNC path and the other got the mapped path?
