Question for all on Files size and ram usage

Could you all help me out with this? I am interested in the largest assembly you have (file size) and the amount of RAM it uses when it is open in 2007. What is the amount of RAM installed in the box? This will help us determine the amount RAM to put in our Dell boxes.

The biggest assembly file we have is 108MB. This is just the file itself. All supporting sub-assemblies and parts total about 1.02GB.

We have 2GB of RAM, and opening this file only leaves about 300MB of physical ram left, and uses approx. 1GB of the page file. Only time I run into memory issues with this assembly is when I try to do a PhotoWorks render. Even then, I can get large renders, but gets bogged down when trying to crank up all the settings.

The more RAM, the better. This is a tried and true fact. You want no less than 2GB of RAM. If you can stuff 4GB in, I'd strongly recommend it. Bear in mind, too, that you'll want a good graphics card to compliment all the RAM.

  I believe you'll also need to activate the /3GB switch if you are running a 32-bit system and want to take full advantage of 4GB of RAM

    Heck, I have the /3GB switch activated and I only use 2GB RAM. It actually seemed to make a difference...

I have a sldasm who's Assembly Statistics report 1291 components.
The sldasm file size is 12MB - supporting files add up to 363mb.

Windows task manager shows 2gb ram total, .67gb available with the file open.
Windows task manager shows 2gb ram total, .94gb available with the file closed.

Even though I only have 2gb of ram, I've been running with the /3gb switch turned on. I did this right after I got the computer (9 months ago) and have enjoyed a very stable and responsive workstation.

As a side note, I just searched my system for SLDASM's by file size. I found a SW06 project that showed a 59MB file size. I opened it with SW07 and saved the changes to migrate the files to the new version of SW. The new sldasm file size is 11MB.

Conclusion: you might be more interested in component count than file size in evaluating assemblies under SW07.

I think the type of hard drive is important, too. I'm using 10Krpm SATA drives with one drive dedicated to WinXP page file & related Bill Gates stuff. With WinXP 32 bit, I think that 2gb of ram is okay, 4gb is probably a waste. Definitely get a dual processor system. If you're going to WinXP 64 bit (Vista) then I'd install more ram than your budget will allow (or whatever comes first).

  Same here. Only have 2GB RAM but have the /3GB switch activated. Definitely has helped, especially with PhotoWorks
