Is there a way to apply circular symmetry to shell elements? (SW Sim 2013 SP3.0)
as of 2013, symmetry is only valid for quarter and half symmetry. this is so that the results can be mirrored (new for 2014). in 2013 you'll see mirrored preview.
just add the symmetry manually using the instructions in that help article.
do you mean cyclic symmetry or circular?
circular is described here: http://help.solidworks.com/2014/English/SolidWorks/cworks/c_Symmetry_Restraints_for_Shell_Models.htm
I mean circular, but it only allows me to pick faces and not edges as shown in the help sections of both 2013 and 2014.
are they planar? are you using quarter or half symmetry or a slice?
did you check that it works for orthoganol parts? (just to check that things are working)
Its a slice of a tank head. If I model it a 1/4, then the standard symmetry works fine. I wanted to use 1/8 slice, but wasn't able to do so.
Does it have something to do with the fact that I modelled it as a surface rather than a sheet metal part?

I have been waiting for that!
You could always use the edges constrained normal with 'Flat Face' BCs on planes made on each cut - Jared helped me set that up earlier this year when I had the same issue. Sounds like SW is fixing some of the circ symmetry issues though so they may be best now - not sure until I try out '14!
