What are your system specs? Have you checked your graphics card driver is up to date?
Windows 8 64 bit
Intel core i7 2.4GHz with turbo up to 3.4GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 7870M graphics card
5GB dedicated graphics
Laptop is probably 5 months old
Driver is set to automatically update and last update was done 8th of October
SolidWorks 2012 isn't supported on Win8. http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/SystemRequirements.html
Whether there's any way around that, I don't know.
Edit: having seen your specs, the Radeon cards aren't supported either. So it looks like you may have bought the wrong tool for the job I'm afraid.

I had 2010 running on it but after a while it started doing the same thing.
When programmes open, a window shows up asking whether I want a certain programme to make changes in my hard drive (when you run as administrator). I accidentally pressed no and it still opened. After I closed that session of SW it no longer opened properly. I tried uninstalling SW 2010 and installing it back again but nothing happened...
You might want to ask this question in the Administration forum. You could move it using the command in the Actions box at the upper right.
I Found the solution. It was pretty stupid but anyone could get caught by this and make the same mistake.
Turns out that with windows 8 when you plug in a second monitor and you disconnect it after you're done with it, the OS sometimes gets confused and thinks it's still plugged in. So some windows will appear only in the second monitor (and of course you can't see this because you don't have it plugged in) leading you to believe that there is something wrong with SW. To fix it I just pressed the Windows key + left arrow (or right depending on which monitor is set as your main monitor) and the SW window appears again! :-)
