Can anyone kindly tell me if I can open 2014 with 2013 SP 5.0 EV?
This might have cropped up before but currently I can't open files I created with 2014 beta. I just get the 'Future versions' error.
Any help is appreciated.
Welcome to SolidWorks forums David.
Help files for SW2014 (Previous Release Interoperability) suggest that you can open files from 2014 in SP 5 of 2013 (so I'm assuming that SP 5.0 EV will not work for opening future version files)
You might also find this post helpful for your future reference.
Thanks for your help, Deepak.
I considered this might be the case but it seems odd to me not to include all the intended features of a product in a pre-release version - it kind of reduces the effectiveness of bug-detection.
Is there any documentation to confirm this is the case?
David I can't comment on that but if you need I can test it out i.e. try opening parts from SW2014 PR1 on SW2013 SP 5.0 EV
OR can send you files from SW2014 PR1.
I just tried it with a 2014PR1 file into 2013 EV5 & if it is an assmbly I get a failed to open file error. If it is a part model, the feature tree shows a future version file feature in the feature tree but no data in the model. FWIW if you're looking to open 2014 files into 2013 & get all of the features that you have in the 2014 file you won't get anything more than a dumb solid just like if you saved a parasolids file out of 2014 & opened that in 2013. IMO this is just a sales gimmick to tell people they can open 2014 files in 2013 and nothing more.
Ah, thanks very much.
This questions stems from me using the beta to work on a production model. I'll think twice before I do it again!
But apart from viewing it give some more options and I feel those can be helpful in some cases:
With a SolidWorks part or assembly open in Service Pack 5 of the previous release you can:View configurations.Use the Measure tool.View Mass Properties and Custom Properties.View Materials. You cannot edit future version SolidWorks parts or assemblies in Service Pack 5 of the previous release. However, you can use future version parts and assemblies in drawings and assemblies of Service Pack 5 of the previous release.
