I employed a RG plane to section my assembly, then rotated the view to show the sectioned and adjacent faces, then named the view and saved the assembly.
When I create a drawing of the current view from the assembly, the orientation is correct but the model is whole, not sectioned.
How can I make it sectioned?
that's not working for me - in the view palette when i try to select the section view, there is a pop-up error that says "you need to drag and drop parent view before section view"
Yes that is correct. You need to insert the parent view first. Check this Re: You can transfer a section view from assembly to drawing
Also, check that the configuration you have used in the sectioned assembly is the same configuration used in the drawing view.

Did you have any luck getting a section view to show up on your drawing?
I must be missing something; I can't get any section view to actually show a cut cross section on a drawing.

If you are using the Section View tool from the heads-up tool bar, you will need to save the section as an Annotation View.
Can you not use the section tools in the actual drawing?
I have the section view saved as an Annotation View in the assembly, but after that I must be missing a step, or more.
I can use the section tools in the drawing, but I thought if I could create them in the assembly and use them throughout the design process and then use the same section view on the drawing I could eliminate the extra step of creating the section view again.
I'm just learning Solidworks and trying to use some of the same practices that I have used in the past in other softwares.
When you save section view in part/assembly then make sure you choose Drawing annotation view.
Then in the drawing, in the View Palette you should see view(s) with section arrows. That is the parent view you need to insert first and only after that you can put the section views saved in part/assembly.
