I have give someone a step and also an sat file from solidworks 2012. The step file they say there is nothing in it, the sat file gives a message that it's not compatabile. Anyone have an idea what files can be used?

You should have simply sent the sldprt (or sldasm and sldprt) file.

          Inventor will read it directly.

          or

          Save as STEP

          or

set the *.sat (ACIS) Options to v7.

(ACIS (*.sat) is a proprietary format owned by Spatial (Dassualt) and Autodesk products stopped using ACIS years ago.)
STEP (*.stp) is a neutral format.
