Display States for multi-body parts in an assembly

I've been trying to highlight certain bodies by color in different assembly display states.  I've been successful when I simply want to change the color of an entire part in the assembly, but in some cases, I only want to highlight individual bodies in a multi-body part.  In the created example below, the assembly consists of two parts.  The square is one part, and the cylinders are a second, multi-body part.  I created three assembly level display states.  In the first, I set the square to be red.  In the second, I set the two shortes cylinders to be red.  However, that change seems to propagate through all of the display states, such that when I re-select the display state that is supposed to show only the square as red, both the square and the short cylinders are red.

I also tried creating part display states in the multi-body part, but I don't know how to access them at the assembly level.

Can someone point me in the right direction?  I've included the zipped pack-n-go.
