we are working with large assemblies in solidworks. when we work on certain layouts of size 100 mb, pc hanging, windows stopping the application. also certain drawings will take 10 minutes to open.
we are using intel core i5-3470 @3.20 ghz processor, 16 gb ram, nvidia quadro k 600 1 gb graphics card with 64 bit win 7 os.
i want to know wether our specs is not enough for large assemblies in solidworks . if so pls mention a best spec for solidworks .
SW is CPU intensive with small assemblies and goes into cardiac arrest with large assemblies.
SW provides a few options for working with Large Assemblies, but each comes with a gotcha which makes it unusable in specific situations.

I regularly work with very large assemblies, make sure you limit the number of in-context references.
Does a pattern of an external part count as an "in context reference"?
I imagine that assembly features will count as such, also parts created in the context of the assembly.
Probably Mates are in context references, hence a recommendation to employ rigid sub assemblies in preference to mated sub assemblies. I assume here that mates necessary for initial assembly but then suppressed, are not evaluated after suppression.
