I am trying to open an STP file (large assembly, 170MB) and it is failing because of template problems. The message in the error file is:
"Error: Possibly template file is missing or corrupted.
STEP-in did not complete successfully".
Make sure the path for file templates have been defined under Tools > Options > Default Templates and Always use these default document templates is selected.
Thank you Deepak. I had already put the default templates at the top of the list but these templates were not in the Solidworks2013 folder - they were in the Solidworks2010 Templated folder. I had to move them into the SW2013 folder and put that at the top of the list and it worked. I don't understand why the same files in a different location works.
There are two locations you need to update.
Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations > Templates (which is the setting you are refering to)
Tools > Options > System Options > Default Templates (the setting Deepak is refering to)
If you have custom templates (or any custom files) they should be moved to a location outside of the standard SolidWorks install location and pathed accordingly. This will let everyone in the company use the same files. They will also not get over-written on future SolidWorks installs. This should be a directory that gets backed up regularly as well.
Thank you Anna, I had missed the default templates options. All is well now and the file (170MB) turned out to be a 1400 part assembly and took over half an hour to open!
