Breaking 2 parts into 3 parts but only listing 2 parts in BOM

I've come across an odd situation that I'm not sure what to do. I have an assembly that uses two, 15 pin electrical headers that need to be broken in three smaller parts for the assembly. I made configurations for 4,8 & 11 pins in the 15 pin part. I placed those three parts in the assembly, and the BOM shows three separate parts, as it should. I would like the BOM to show QTY 2 of the 15 pin part. I could exclude two from the BOM and text-in the QTY, but that's "cheating". I could change the grouping in the BOM properties, but then my screws will get combined because they're all different configurations in a "screw file". Any clues how I can group some parts, and not group others?

Do you use SW 2013?

If so, declare one of the components as "envelope".

You'd think by August I would be on SW2013, but it's still on the IT guy's list to upgrade a couple of our computers to Win7. So no, SW2012 yet.

What would happen if you used Assembly cuts to split your two 15 pin connectors into your 4, 8 and 11 pin connectors?

Extruded Cut in an assembly works very similar to the same part feature. In it's PropertyManager you can select which components to cut, and whether you want the cut to carry through to the part file or apply only to the assembly and leave the part file (or files) unchanged. I don't use it much but it can be very handy. Just for one example, if you were modeling a wood deck, and had an angled cut across several boards on one corner, you could use an assembly cut to cut across them without the need to have a seperate part file or configuration for each one.

You might be able to exclude all 3 headers from the BOM, and then you can add two 15 pin headers and hide them in the assembly. Just be sure that the parts get hidden and not suppressed, that way they show up in the BOM, but not the model.

I ended up cheating instead becase I had to get it done. I excluded two parts from the BOM, then I just "penciled" in the correct qty on the BOM.
