Using reference mates with parts that have multiple ways of mating

I'm trying to set up reference mates between a pipe and joint. There are three ways to mate these two parts as seen in the attached picture, but I can't seem to find a good way of doing this. When the joint is placed into an assembly, SolidWorks tends to ignore the mate in the middle of the picture in favor of the one of left. Is there a good way to handle this situation in an efficient manner? I do not want to have to manually create these mates everytime I bring in a joint.
