We are looking at using Workgroup PDM but I have been getting mixed answers from our VAR on whether we can use it over the WAN or not. I have not been able to find anything in the help files that say it only works over the LAN or can work over the WAN so any definitive info on this would be great. There would be 4 to 5 users working at the home offices where the server is hosted and one user working at a sister site over the WAN. Other than the speed of the WAN vs. the speed of LAN can this setup work?
Thanks
Yes, it can work. About a year ago we outsourced our IT to a company 2 states away. We moved our Exchange server and PDM server to their servers. At first we were using 2x T1 lines which was too slow so we had fiber installed with 50 Mbit up/down. There is a little more lag compared to having the server on-site, but not a problem. Obviously large files take longer to transfer. At home I have cable internet service and it works fine.
When I am out of the office I connect via VPN. PDM works just like I'm at the office. One time I used my phone's service to connect and checkout files from PDM to my laptop.
Getting it to work probably depends on your IT professional more than PDM.
