What do I do to get a vehicle to move on a road surface in Motion Analysis? A combo of Mates in the SW parts/assemblies and/or the mates in the Motion analysis set up?

I was advised to use Rack and Pinion plus Contact of Road with Tire plus the Motor on one of the tires. This did work, but does eveyone else use Rack and Pinion? From what I saw on Youtube I am not too sure if they were using Rack and Pinion as I think there then would have to be constant contact as with a train and the railway.Is there any detailed guide on this anywhere. I use SW 2013.

  I just have a simple representation of a prime mover (single wheels on the two axels at the rear) on a simple road (extruded rectangle). The front wheels turn, but the rear wheels don't. It moves in a straight line for as long as the time is set. You can see it at http://youtu.be/o2VYnn5KUXo. Not a good video, but you can see the truck going.
  
  I would be glad for some detailed how-to for this type of work.

    That's how it's done in this animation. All wheels are locked together and one is set to a rack and pinion with the ground. As the truck moves forward (or backward) the wheels turn. Same for the crane wheels.

Are you looking to animate or simulate the motion?

Rob's method sounds like a pretty cool way to animate it. If you need to simulate (engineering results), you've got a bit more work to do with motors and contact..etc.

Just out of curiosity, does the rack and pinion option work for turning it around corners..etc or straight lines only?

  Hi All... I have not tried anything else with the rack and pinion. Yes I need motion analysis results. I don't think the motion samples that I have seen on Youtube like http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=5u6WVqmy0tc&NR=1 could be done with rack and pinion, so I am keen to hear what others have done.

    if you need something like that, you can't do it with a rack and pinion. rack and pinion is for animation only. to create a vehicle animation like the one you just posted, you need to use solidworks motion. each of the tires will interact with the ground and the wheels will be driven either individually or like they would on the vehicle.

      so rack and pinion is for animation only eh? I just want to see some description of setting up a motion analysis of a car like in that youtube video.

        The steps are pretty simple
        Setup the assembly so all the parts that need to move, move the at you want. So for example the suspension needs to work, the wheels can turn.
        Add a ground. Add contact between those components. Add a motor to the wheels and it will go.
        
        Some tips:
        Simplify your assembly as much as you can.
        Put everything that moves as a group in a sub assembly.
        Start simple. Gravity loads to check contact. Motors at the wheels instead of at the real motor..,etc

        Starting simple means you don't need motors. Just give it an initial velocity and watch it coast.

        I will just have to experiment.
        
        I can't be too simple as I want to simulate gear changing, which should give a temporary drop in the velocity/speed/momentum. This is a critical part of my project. I think event based motion may be the only way to do that? Anyway I can practice with motion for a while along the lines Jared suggested then try event based motion.
        
        I am not concerned about suspension, just getting accurate acceleration and the effects of gear-changing.
