Is there a way to drag & drop a custom color swatch to a face, and if so, how can I display that swatch on say the Task flyout pane?
Create your Custom Colour
Create a folder and Save the Custom Colour (to that Folder)
Appearances>Add Folder Location
Colour Swatch will display in Add Folder
Search shows that I have what I believe to be colour swatch files in a project folder, and that project folder is listed in the appearances tab in the Task pane, but the colours do not show in the lower section of the pane.
What am I missing?
It looks like your suggestion works with Appearances.
This time I want the simplicity of just color, without the complexity of lighting etc.

That's because of the file format!
Appearance & colour are .p2m files.
If you know the RGB or HSV of the colour then you can create and Save in Colour
Rob Rodriguez has a good post on Custom Appreances/ colour
