how to select a component on screen

Hi all,

I serched the archives, but the search terms here are pretty general and return a gazillion hits. So I'll just ask...

Is there a way to select a component in an assembly via geometry? I know I can select a face or feature on screen (click once to select a face, click tweice to select a feature) and the component will highlight in the tree - then I can pick the component in the tree and perform a component operation... I just was hoping there was a way to select the component directly from the screen.

Nathan,

As Ian says, you can copy & paste fairly quickly. Once you have copied your material you can right click any where on the part & select paste, a quick menu pops up & you can choose to apply it to the face, feature, body, part or assembly. This method is fairly quick if you are able to see the parts easily & they are not hidden. The other thing you could try that might work for you is to try to select the parts from the Display Manager & the appearance tab. If you know what material they already have you can just select that & apply a new material.

Ian,

No - this puts you into an edit part mode (obviously) which makes that part active and kind of ignores all the other assembly stuff that I want to reference.

Here's the specifics:

I want several parts to have the same appearance because they're made of the same material. When I create a new part of the same material, I want to copy the appearance from an existing component to the new one. The only way I have been able to do this is at the assembly level under the appearances tab in the tree (apearances manager?). It lists all the colors used in the assy. If I select a component and then RMB on the color I want, there's a selection: "attach to selection". This applies the component color I want to the new part.

If you have a better way to copy colors, I would be interested in that as well!

2013 has a Copy Appearance icon on the RMB which looks like 2 beachballs together.

Once that is used, you then get a Paste Appearance icon which looks like a clipboard with beachball.

Good tip guys - I have to get on my IT department to install 2013... (I am IT - just haven't found the time yet...)

I did play around a bit and I created a custom swatch and added the current color to the custom swatch. Now it is available when I go to color a new part. I have not yet tried it in real life, but I think that will get me what I want.
