Can someone suggest what would be the best laptop setup to run solidworks? Memory size, videocard, speed etc....
Im looking to purchase a laptop and Id like to do some freelance work from home.
What is your budget? Are you looking for a workstation class machine, or just something to do some basic modeling?
I am using a MacBook Pro Retina Display 15". i7 Quad Core 2.6GHz, 16GB, SSD. Excellent to run SolidWorks.
SolidWorks is not officially supported on Mac though people are running it using some virtual machine or other way. So not sure if I should recommend it to you or not but my 2 cents.
I run it under Windows 7 64-bit installed in the Bootcamp partition. So far so good.
Something like a Dell Precision series laptop should work well.
If you want a laptop certified to run SolidWorks, I would get a Dell Precision M4700 or M6700. They aren't cheap, but none of the certified laptops are. You can also check the Dell Outlet for a refurbished Precision which will often be much cheaper than buying new, but still has a very good warranty.
As far as specifics, you want to get the fastest processor you can afford. Personally, I would go with a four core model (although SolidWorks will only use one most of the time). For storage, the best option would be an SSD (Solid State Drive), at least as your boot drive. Load times will be much faster. For video cards, you want either an Nvidia Quadro or AMD FirePro. If neither of those are available in the laptop you are looking at, you might as well get the cheapest card available. I would go with a minimum of 8GB of memory. Memory is fairly cheap now, so more is not going to hurt you.
