I need to flatten a half sphere segment for a student project I'm doing, I plan to laser cut it from veneer... Any idea how to do that without purchasing any expensive add-ons? I'm using a solid works student version....
There is too much stretching involved in flattening that kind of shape. SolidWorks can not calculate that.
Any ideas how I can still do that? Using other tools? Free add-ons? One time favors? Paid favors...?
You can model it, but I don't know of any way to flatten it out.
blankworks, logpress are the gold partners that do this, I do not think they have student versions, may be able to get a 30 day trial.

If you think of Sheetmetal Basics and with some basic SWx skills, you could do this easily. Really no math necessary!
Check this model and let me know if you need help to follow the steps I took.
The only thing, I can't seem to open the file, it sais "Future Version", although I'm using the latest student version available... 2012-2013.
Can you somehow save the file in a different format so that I can open it?
Thank you in advance,
Student version is one version behind.
You didn’t provide any sizes and I just picked some numbers. So exported/imported dumb solid is not any good for you. Unless you scale them appropriately.
My advice is that it is better if you could try to understand the concepts than using or asking for models. I wanted to support a student and also mentioned to ask for clarifications if needed.
Anybody else having problem to open my file?
Or anyother better way of doing this?
