Sure. Just drag the thin line between them all the way up, so you will cover the second tree with the new one.

I did and it worked, but why does this happen? I must have done something to cause that.
You probably accidentally dragged that line down. No worries.

If you double click that line it will toggle the dual section.

You are not doing anything wrong. There are actually 2 images of the same tree, one over the other.
As per the Help File:
You can split the FeatureManager design tree and either display two FeatureManager instances, or combine the FeatureManager design tree with the ConfigurationManager or PropertyManager.
