I've been proven wrong in my memories of what WPDM is capable of, so take this with a grain of salt. I believe that WPDM is like SW, in that you can have multiple versions on your machines at once. I believe we had WPDM 2008 and WPDM 2010 running at the same time for a while, before we got everything moved to 2010. With any luck the folks who actually know the answer will pipe up.

We upgraded 2 seperate vaults from SW2012 sp2 to SW2013sp1 without any issues. Only difference is that we could not install the Admin Client on the server because it is still at MS Server 2003. Never use it from the server anyway. We also did not do any task manager runs on the vault for updating. So far, so good.
