I know that this discussion has been made before, but I am unable to locate it. We are getting ready to to go from SW 2012 SP3.0 to SW 2013 SP 2.0, and I need to know if I need to update WPDM to 2013. And if so, does anyone have a reference guide on how to successfully perform this. I have done plenty of SW updates but never done a WPDM update. I'd appreciate any and all assistance on this.

Yes you will need to update WPDM. If you are using the SW Install manager, just select "server products" when asked what you are looking to update. Choose the server and it should go just fine. Just be sure the install manager is referencing the correct wpdm location.
You don't need to update the files in the vault but if you choose to, SW Task Scheduler has a task to do it. I would suggest copying your existing vault before doing anything. This is pretty easy - shut off the vault server in "services" on the computer/server where the vault is installed, then simply copy the vault folder to another with a different name in case you need to use it later. Then remember to start the vault service back up.

If you are going to separate the process of moving to 2013 on SW and WPDM, then update WPDM first. WPDM 2013 can handle SW 2012 files. WPDM 2012 can't handle SW 2013 files.

I was hoping that "WPDM 2013 can handle SW 2012 files" but this is not the case. I updated the Workgroup PDM Vault Server to 2013 but can't use it from SW 2012. When I try to access the Vault it tells me "You must update this software to match the version of the SW Workgroup PDM Server you are trying to log into". Next it gives me the possibility to update the client but in the end fails to do it. The reason for the fail is: my server is 32 bit but the client are 64bit. I am told it doesn't have available 64bit Add-In on the server.
Do you know another way of updating the client?

I believe you are right that WPDM 2013 won't work with SW 2012 directly. (I don't think you can have WPDM 2013 as an add-in for SW 2012.) For some reason I thought that we used to run WPDM 2010 with SW 2008 and SW 2010, but I no longer have a computer with all of the software on it to try that out.
I also seem to recall that we ran with several versions of WPDM simultaneously, just as we ran with several versions of SW on our systems. But maybe that is an invalid memory.

Let me clarify what Jeff was saying. Workgroup can handle SW2012 "files", but it can't interface with SW2012 software. With workgroup you are limited to the same major release of SolidWorks. You can be on different Service packs, but not versions. You should always try and maintain the same Service packs between SolidWorks and PDMW whenever possible.
Jerry, I think your memory was invalid. There wasn't that case for the years I've been using it, and even if it worked I wouldn't trust it.
One more thing to be aware of is Server 2003 will not be able to install the PDMW Admin client, so you'll need to install that on an individual computer. I hope you're all at Windows7 by now??
