anyhow . i defined the distance by selecting a two plane..........

You can also select their temporary axis.
I'm not sure about the reason of distance mate not available with edges. Please submit a request to your VAR or SW.

You can select vertex, however you would need to do it multiple times so the parts stay parallel,

Not sure of the reason but you can select circular faces to get the distance mate.
