Controlling Part Configurations with Equations in the Assembly

I have an assembly which is composed of extruded parts with the same cross section, but cut to different lengths.  I seems that all the different lengths should be one part but with different lengths.  This would work, but I want to be able to control the length with an equation at the assembly level.  When I add the assembly equation, it changes the length of all the configurations. Is there a way of doing this?

To further explain, here is an example.  Suppose we are making an assembly out of 80/20.  All pieces have the same cross section, but different lengths.  The length of the 80/20 pieces is determined by the distances between the parts they support in the assembly.  I want to drive the length of the 80/20 from measurements and equations at the assembly level.  To do this, I create multiple configurations of the 80/20, but when I try to drive the length for the different configurations, all configurations update to the new value.
