I am working on a project that requires me to simulate winding of a coil of wire over a pulley on to a roll. I am able to make the coil move over the roll but not coil. I am attaching a video of my progress, in SW animation. Please help I am terribly stuck.

I started writing the step by step tutorial on how did that but was not able to complete it fully. I'll try to post it soon.
I have seen the video like a million times now and it makes me wonder everytime I see it as to how! I tried an approach where in I modelled a cable using sweep (twist along path under options) separately and left the center line under-defined. I inserted this part on to the assembly containing roll and edited the part. I dimensioned the free end of the line from one end of the roll and added an equation that related the length of the line and the angle of twist. Though on updation it looks ok but it does not follow the pulley.

I have tried using the similar technique with revolved cut but I am getting the familiar error of "zero thickness". Also the roll on which the cable winds is rotating so I am not able to figure out how to keep the cable stationary if I model it in-context with the roll. I lost my sleep over this and I am more confused!
Have a look at the in-context modelling technique which Deepak demostrates nicely in his "Ball through tube" animation:

A similar approach, whereby you model your complete coil and then use a cut to shorten it, ought to work.
