Having a lot of trouble completing mold design - Cannot Knit Surfaces

Hello, I am a mechanical engineering student and currently have a student version of solidworks. I am unable to complete a mold design in which I have deadline coming up. Iv noticed a lot of answered questions on the forums and tutorials however my design is much different to them and desperately need help.

I am designing a mould for a C-ring and I have tried everything. I know it can be done. Any help appreciated.

I think my parting surfaces are right but im not sure im only recently re-learning SolidWorks. I have inserted drafts during the body extrude and based on advice from a lecturer I extruded from the midplane as he said a split mould would be easier to design.

2 things;

1) you will want to have cut-extrude2 set to draft outward, not inward (and you shouldn't need cut-extrude3).

2) you will want the parting ling to go around boss-extrude2, boss-extrude3, and dome1.

Jeremy first off thank you so much for your reply. While I immediately saw an improvement when I create the tooling split I am still getting the cannot knit surfaces. Thanks so much for your speedy response is there anything else I can do?

You need to untrim the parting surface first.

Alin sorry for the late reply I hav been preparing for a presentation for the last few days. That part you sent me there is that fully completed now just without moving the tooling split? I have 2 more moulds to make after this however once I do it once I can complete it for the other two

I am pretty sure it is the overlapp in the surfaces that is preventing the knit.

In SW 2012 the parting surface command knits and merges all those faces into one big happy face.

Can you open the fist file I attached? It will show you what happens there.

Of course, for such a simple part, combine & split (or intersect in 2013) would get faster results.

Alin, Thanks so much for this. Could you explain to me what you did to complete this? I have a much more complicated in which I have to develop a mould for after this based on the CSA of a femoral knee replacement. I have the part designed however would it be ok if I requested your help again once I get as far as I can with it

Sure Cathal. I will try to record a video tomorrow to walk you through all the steps I took, but if you want to really master these tools, you might want to consider taking a 2 day course from your local VAR.
