I deleted a part from my assembly and the assembly disappeared... BIG PROBLEM.

I deleted a part from the assembly that I was working on and then my whole assembly disappeared. I did a ctrl+z to unto my delete but it didnt do anything.

I then exited my asm without saving and now I cannot even open my assembly it comes up with and error. This is a BIG problem since I have some time into this and don't want to have to start over...

I am using SW 2009.

Open the recycle bin folder and see if any of it is in there.
You can then tell it to restore.

  Nope. Nothing is in the recycle bin.
  This is the screen that pops up when I try and open the file. It immediately closes Solidworks and this pops up.

    Check the Task Manager to make sure no SW processes are running. I always use the attached BAT file after a crash, and before restarting SW.
    
    Do you have the auto-recover options enabled?

Hi Stephen,
I had a very similar situation with a corrupted file a few months ago. The only way I could access the file was to pull an earlier version off our server back up files. If everything is local you could try a "restore computer to this date" type thing.

  I am working off of a server. All of the parts and assembly documents are on there. So I really dont have that option.

Do you have a backup copy?

If not send the file to your VAR to see if it can be repaired.

  Our subscription to Technical Support from SW has expired.

I see you're on 2009 and wanted to let you know that 2013 has updated this workflow. Now when you delete a component, only that component is deleted, not the entire sub-assembly. Big improvement over having to edit the sub-assembly and then delete the component.

Not sure if this is directly related to your problem, but I'm sure it would be helpful to know.

  Thanks for the recommendation for 2013. We don't do a lot of Modeling, some projects here and there. I pretty much was given the opportunity to do all of our Mechanical design work after I was hired last June. I had 3 years of experience using Pro-E in college and that gave me enough background to pick up Solidworks (after using both I definitely prefer SW of Pro-E).
  
  Being a very small company (13 full time employees) we cannot justify dumping that kind of money into new SW software...

Maybe try creating a dummy part with the same file name as the deleted component and put it in the same folder where the deleted component was. Then cross your fingers. In my experience VAR's have never been able to save a corrupted file.

  Thats the thing. The part I removed from the assembly is still in the same folder. I can open and edit that part but I cannot open the assembly.

    Have you tried going into the folder where you have your part files and removing the part file that is bad. Then try to open the assembly. It won't find the part file you removed but that would give you a starting point.

    Have you tried opening up all of the files in the assembly? Maybe one of the other files is corrupt. If none of them is corrupt then keep them open and try to open the assembly file.

Actually to give you guys a little history, we actually consolidated all of our Server Drives onto a new server last week. So the file that I had been working on last thursday (i had Friday and Monday off) was still on our old server.

So I just copied that file into the folder on our new compiled server drive that I am working off of and opened the file.

Its all there except for what I have added in the last 2 days, which wasn't much.
I wish I would have thought of that earlier. I was freaking out yesterday when that happened, sweating bullets...

  Don't work across the network. That is one way to get corrupt files. When you save it has to write across network lines. If there are timeouts or other communication hiccups, that could cause a corrupt file. I've seen working across network cause all sorts of problems and never recommend doing it.
