The trick is using an angular cut for the seam. I also picked an edge on the seam, not the cross sectional face.
Attached are a couple bitmaps to illustrate this technique.
I also attached a flattened DXF file (R14) assuming you may need it.

Steve's part will flatten just needs some help on modeling technique.
I woud create the part in halves. Also added a surface and thickened, this will give you normal cuts and keep material thickness constant. Use Insert Bends instead of Convert to Sheet Metal.
Also watch your Cut-Extrude3 sketch. I constained it to the origin, it was skewed a bit.

Thank you for the quick response. I understand making the piece in two halves, what are the surface offset and body delete commands and why are they used?

I didn't try opening your model (no time!). It might help if you posted a picture. If your part requires the material to be drawn, then SolidWorks can't flatten it. Normally it only flattens parts that can be bent in a press.
