Why does SW default the "type" of file to .sldprt only?

Every time I launch SW and go to open a file, the file type "offering" is only .sldprt (see lower right corner).  Why would the software only allow "parts" to be open?  I have to click the expand button and select "All Files" or the specific type of files (Drawing or Assemblies) if I wish for something other than parts.

What the *&@%_-+ gives?  I can't find a setting that allows any control.
