Custom Properties in part file vs assembly file

I was experimenting with creating a custom property in a part file so I can use it to populate a BOM. For example I made a custom Property Name "Length", Type "Text" and associated it to an extruded dimension 25 and added "mm"after the dimension name in the Value/Text Expression. Thus I was able to add a column to my BOM titled "Length" that was populated with the value I wanted driven by the dimension  (25mm).

I attempted to do the same thing in an assembly driven by an added dimension or a extruded cut to the part inside the assembly. The Custom Properties were populated but the Property Name did not show up as an option when I added the new column to my BOM.

Any Thoughts ?
