Can you compress a part within an Assembly?

I've seen several posts on here about how to compress a spring within an assembly but I don't think this directly applies to my situation. I'm trying to compress a rubber housing within an assembly but haven't hand any luck thus far. To this point the best solution I could think of was to make a sub-configuration for each housing size to represent it's compressed height. But by doing so this would throw off the drawings and BOM's for the subassembly that reference this compressed part. Any thoughts??

Ryan,

You may want to try an assembly cut extrude feature. They seem have no impact on the model, drawing, and BOM if you uncheck the propagate feature to parts.

  I could do a cut extrude, the only thing is the geometry of the housing has intermediate sheds and for the purpose of modeling this is the place where I need to "subtract" the material when it's under compression.

Why does having multiple configurations throw off the drawings and BOMs for the subassembly?

  Multiple configurations would mess with the BOM's because I can't assign the same name to a (sub)configuration. In this case I have to give it a prefix which could get confusing for the factory.

    does the interferance of the rubber piece actually cause you issues at the assembly level?

      Well yes and no. I'd like to constrain the end plates of my assembly to an equation which reflects the fixed assembly heights according to our specs. But because there not compressed I have to constrain them using a coincident mate, otherwise there would be interference issues.

    Would it mess you up to much to choose "User Specified Name" instead of "Configuration Name" in the Bill of Materials Options of the Configuration Properties?

      If I choose this method wouldn't I have to go back and specify a user specified name for every part/assy I have already modeled? And then go and change which one I choose to display in the BOM?

        No, it's a property of each part configuration. Open one of the parts, open the configuration manager, right click on one of the configurations, and then choose Properties. Now you can choose under Bill of Materials Options whether to use Document Name, Configuration Name, or User Specified Name for the "Part number displayed when used in a bill of materials".
