So I'm sure this just must be something very simple but I just cant figure it out on my own I have done search after search and read through the solidworks tutorials.  I am simply trying to copy something from one part in an asm to another part. As Ilistrated bellow

Asm

     Part 1

          Surf 1

     Part 2

Now lets just say I want to use surf 1 to create some geomitry in Part 2.  I can not just copy and paste it because I get the error "Use the base part function to create a derived part"  In CATIA I would just simply publish > Copy > Paste special as result with link.  But I cant find anything similar to that in Solidworks.  Can someone please explaine how this works?
