I am facing a problem with read only files. When ever I open some assembly it says that some one is using this file. But at that time no one is using that file.
so now I can not update that file. I have deleted all temporary file from my PC. I keep all files on server.
Can anyone help me out.

I already untick read only and open the files in SW. Also I do not use PDM.

Download Process Explorer (free tool) here. Now execute Process Explorer and use the "Find" menu and start typing the name of your file. It should give you a result of the handle (program/process) that has that file locked down. Make sure your file is not open in Solidworks.

Thank you Deepak! You saved my day's work! Thank you so much! I struggled with SW for the last 6 hours for not letting me edit parts or attached files within assemblies/drawings. all I had to do is to uncheck a box! so simple - thanks to you!
We do not use PDM in our shop, small shop a few designers and management. One thing we ran into is someone has a part file open(detailing, updating hole tolerances, etc.) when you are working in the assembly. After they have closed out the file in assembly mode you can right click on file and there is an option for reload which will bring in all read only files to their current state. The reload dialog will also tell you who has the write permissions to files that are read only. We occasionally get a "whoops did not know I had that open" situation here.
If you are NOT using PDM (which we are not), then have every user enable their Multi-user environment and add the shortcut menu items associated with it.
This adds the menu item for assemblies (if you RMB on a component):
This item is changed to "Get Write Access" if you already have it as read only.
Also, in the File drop down menu, the item is added "Make Read-Only" or "Get Write Access" depending on if you have the file open as read only or not.
If someone else has the file open and then they close it, you can just toggle this function rather then going through the reload process.
Dan we use this option already. Sometimes an intern will adjust the settings. Sigh another story altogether.
Most of the issue we have is shop floor personnel opening solid files instead of e-drawings which locks out parts.
I have spent the last 3 months upgrading and establishing permissions so this is not an issue anymore.
I have worked both in the PDM enviroment and back in the day DB works(Which was awesome) and I sincerely miss that.

We do not use PDM but we have the same problem; to solve the problem temporary we restarting SW, but this is not normal.
The read only file problem came back every time that I open a file and close the file but not closing SW, next time that I need to use the files, the file show as read only and need to close SW, if I skip theclosing SW, I can't save the file.
Any help will be appreciated
i just had this problem and i had to go to the folder i was saving into and there was a check box for making them read only there, seems like there is like 4 or 5 ways to make a file read only. what a pain
Tom Putt, this is NOT the same thing as the "Make Read Only" that I listed above.
This is the global read only that is assigned by windows. If you check this box that you have pictured, then the file is now PERMANENTLY read only for ALL users, unless someone comes in and check it back off.
In my example, when I select "make read only" from the file menu inside Solidworks, I am making it read only ONLY for me. Now, while I have the read only version open, if someone opens that same file, they can make updates to it. I would then have to reload it after they save it and I will be able to see their updates.

Go to window explorer and right click on the file and select properties. Now check if it is set to read only or not. If yes then uncheck read only and open the files in SW to see if you get same message.
Other thing might be that if you're using PDM and you don't have the ownership of the file (and PDM is checked under Tools> Add-Ins), then you might also get this message. If yes then uncheck PDM from tools > add-ins and check.
Got to Tools > Options and click External References and uncheck Open referenced documents with read-only access
