I have an assembly that has a rod that needs to push a hinged part out of the way as it passes by and I am unsure which mate type I need to use. Right now the parts pass though each other.
You might be able to use a limit mate for that.
If you just need to simulate the contact effect temporary, you can use the Move Component command with the Physical Dynamics option on.
1st guess without a picture or more info: distance limit between the rod and the surface of the hinged part.
here is a screen shot of my file. The small blue shaft needs to push the hinged block out of its way .
1. create a cylindrical dummy part
2. add a cam mate between this dummy part and the hinge block tangent faces
3. add a linear limit mate between the blue shaft and the dummy part
4. hide the dummy part and exclude it from the BOM.

here's a simple setup I played with over lunch
create a spline in the contoured part at the midplane
create a point in a sketch in the rod on the OD at the midplane
coincident mate the spline and point (the point has to be in a sketch, not a reference geometry "point", it won't let you mate sketch geometry to part geometry)
it's not perfect and it will take some time to find the tangent point, but...
(plus watch out for it to lose the solution if you retract too far)
