Suppressing components in a read-only sub-assembly

I often will find myself needing only part of a read-only sub-assembly. The subassembly may have hundreds of parts, and I may only need a couple of dozen or so. I don't need the other components to load every time I open the assembly. I don't want to have to re-create the subassembly or to drag all the components into my new assembly, nor do I want to check out the subassembly from the library to create a new configuration. Is there a way to suppress components ONLY in the upper level assembly, without impacting the assembly they belong to? (If not, there should be!) I currently am on SW 2010.
