Adding color to structural members in assemblies.

The problem I am having is that I can't control individual structural member color for given display states within an assembly.

The company I work for uses colors to highlight specific areas of piping created as structural members. What I would love to be able to do is simply have a single part with all of my structural members in it and be able to change specific members colors given a particular display state or even configuration if there is a way to do it that way. As it stands I have to create hundreds of individual parts with a single member in each one in order to do what I want.

We run SW 2011x64 SP5.0 on Windows 7 x64.

Joe,

In a multi-body part, you can RMB on a body and choose the beachball icon at the top, then choose Body from the drop-down and pick your color. It will apply only to that body.

  Right but when you do that it saves it across all of your display states. I want to be able to color a body/face/structural member for a specific display state only.

    I'm sorry I misunderstood, and I don't use Display States enough to be of any help with that. Hopefully someone else can help.

        Joe,
        You can change individual surfaces and bodies. When you RC on a surface after selecting it you do have the option to
        change just the surface, the body or the entire part. When you branch out the display states you also have the option
        of selecting individual component colors as well.
        If this is not what you are looking for and I have misunderstood what you are looking for if you could explain further that would be great.
        Maybe even some images would help.

        Thats not quite what I mean.
        I can set colors for individual structural members but it ignores the "This Display State" option in the colors feature menu.
        The coloring persists through however many display states you have setup and if you remove the color, it removes it from all display states. What I need is a way to have an individual structural member be different colors in different display states that doesn't involve having a seperate part for each structural member (it's a bit taxing on my laptop).

        Check in your Configuration Manager to see if "Link Display States to Configurations" donw at the bottom is checked.Try unchecking it to see if that helps.

        Display states aren't linked, but it doesn't make any difference one way or the other.

        No, I never found a way to do exactly what I was looking for. The work around I use is to just have multiple parts with my structural members in them.
        
        I know it isn't a great solution but it is the simplist with the software we own. You could accomplish this quicker on small projects by exporting your solid model to something like STL and coloring individual bodies in a program like Blender if you geometry is more complex than just pipe runs.

You can change the color or display state of part(s) osub-assemblies in an assembly file. If your structural member at the part level is a black color and you wish to leave it that color at the part level then right click on the part(s) or sub-assembly in an assembly file, edit it's color. Make sure to click the line showing the assembly icon at the "xxxxx@AssemblyFileName". Maybe this is what works for you???
