Hello,
When using placing views of different configs, I go to the properties and make sure they are all linked to the BOM on sheet one, however, when I turn the qty on for the balloon, I constantly get a "-" instead of a qty. If I turn the link the BOM off, I get numbers, but then the balloon and the qtys do not match the BOM/ Any suggs would be greatly appreciated.

Can you post some images of what you are experiencing?
Also, are you showing each config in the BOM ultimately showing the QTY represented for each config?
All I am using the configs for is creating explided views. I just came from the Inventor world, which uses a completely different file type for exploded views, so I am unsure of how to effectively create different exploded views using the configuration feature to suppress the parts I don't need in each view.
Correct me if I am wrong, but in Inventor you have to create an .ipn file which is seperate then the .idw file used for the drawing.
The .ipn file used and needed to create the exploded view.
In Solidworks you don't have to create a seperate file for the exploded view. You create your exploded views in the assembly file.
Then save that view in the assembly. Insert a view into the drawing and select the said named view. RC on the view and select properties.
Then in that dialog window check "Show in exploded state".
Now the only way you are going to need configurations is one if you have certain parts needing to be turned on/off or you need to show
different exploded states. If you can get away with one exploded view then the configurations are not needed for this and your BOM can
be of just the one exploded view. Good and clean.
Scott, unfortunately a single exploded view is not an option as there are many steps to the assembly of my product, thus, requiring many step by step exploded views. I need an option that will allow me to create step by step views, and have them all linked to the same BOM that's on sheet one. As of right now, I have tried making configurations as follows:
I have created configs from the top level (red arrow), and from the preexisting confif (orange arrow), and neither one of those options seem to yield different results. Is SolidWorks not capable of creating multiple exploded views showing only the parts required for that view, and having them all linked to the same BOM located on sheet 1?
I was just about to make my own topic on this very subject until I read this. I am having the exact same problem. Anytime I have multiple derived configurations to create seperate exploded views, I lose the quantity auto fill in my balloon. I can manually edit but that takes away from the efficiency....I have also made sure to check the link to bill of materials box for each view....The item number is correct but the quantity will onlu leave an X just like the OP.....
Any updates to this thread? I'm using SW2011 SP5.0 and still have this exact same issue. Very frustrating....

I'm pretty new to SW, so maybe it's the way that I am using configurations. Should I create individual derived configs, or create derived configs of the default config in order to keep the balloons and the qtys to work correctly?
