I don't have any idea what the Sketchup tool is, but are you maybe thinking of a grid? You can turn that on and then snap to it.
Sorry if my explanation was a little vague. It allows you to create construction geometry/dashed guidelines. Here's a short video to show you what it does.
It's nothing big was just curious if SW offers anything similiar to it.
in Solidworks we use the Measure Tool.
-You have to click on each point you want to measure to and from.
-You can measure to/from points/edges/faces/planes
-If you select a set of edges it will calculate the total length
-If you select a set of faces it will calculate the total area
Unfortunately it does not have the neat option of selecting a reference point and hover over other points to obtain their distances. But perhaps this would make a good enchacement request.
To access the measure tool, point to Tools-->Measure.
