Can Workgroup PDM set a read only status on files wh open in AutoCAD or Draftsight when a file is not owned?
I can check out a file and edit it without taking ownership of it.
Is there a setting somewhere or is it because there are no ties to the solftware.

Yes it does.
Had to logout and login for it to take effect.
It does not change the system property if a copy of the file is already on your hard drive.
But it's better then no control at all.

what Jeff refers to only works for SolidWorks files.
Seems to work with Draftsight and Word files.
I have not tried it with Excel yet.
Have had the vault set some PDFs to Read Only as well, but cannot say it happens systematically.

I know I have had situations where a PDF would not save because it was set to read only and matched some vault ownership status.... But I could NOT reproduce that result today. Have to chalk that up to 'occasional flakiness'.
I was using the PDM explorer to checkout the file, copy it to my computer and then open it. With the file association setup it opens in the correct software.
Checking the file properties in Windows explorer shows the file's read only attribute.
It only get set when it gets copied you your computer.
If you go back and change the ownership in the vault the file's attribute already on your computer does not change or update.

however, if you close the file and re-open it loses the RO.
and /or
if you open RO from SW Explorer and then decide to take ownership it is not dynamic, RO will still be set.
there has to be some connection (toolbar button) between draftsight / word and the vault for this to work "properly" i.e. dynamically like it does with native SolidWorks files.
A dynamic update like SW has would be nice but I don't see that happening.
I think it's nice to have at least this. It should help us.
