We use a lot of variables. Therefore we try to keep everything simple by having the same "Variable name" and "attribute name". We also use custom properties for almost every variable in solidworks.
If you se the picture. The area marked with 1 is for mapping the variables to the data card. You must have this to use it on the data card.
The area marked with 2 is for mapping the variable to your program (Solidworks). You only have to use this for variables you need in you program. If you don't need in your program just leave it blanc. I can see you only have mapped your variables to part and assemblies in Solidworks. For drawing add slddrw in the lower field.

I found a way to get the configuration name of a part or an assembly to populate the data card and BOMs. I added the information to the Number Variable.
We add the part number as the configuration name in the part or assy file. See images below.
This is a read only property. I can't find a way to edit the configuration name from a data card without making a custom property.
