Hi all,
I have a sub assembly which is used once in various other assemblies.
Each time I use it, the icon in the FM tree has the rebuild traffic light attached.
This icon then propagates up through the assemblies into the main master assemblies of our products.
I am not aware that it causes any problems within the higher assemblies - it's just that I don't think there is anything wrong with the sub assembly or the parts in it.
Does anyone else have this?

I had an issue with this at one time although my set up is pretty specific and this was related to it. The problem has since been resolved for me with a SP. I have OptisWorks Add-In installed and the rebuild icon would stay on if the sub-assembly or part used had multiple configurations. If the sub-assemblies you have with the rebuild icon turned on have multiple configurations, my work-around at the time was to live with the icon until the assembly was ready to release and then save the multiple configurations as individual files. Kind of defeats the purpose of configurations though.
I am now on SW2012 SP2.0 and OW2012 SP2.0 and do not have a problem.
Do you have any circular references? (For example, two assembly components edited in context that each have references to the other)

No, the components involved are not internal to, or built with reference to anything else.
The part models are of a bought in extrusion and its fittings which I measured and modelled in 2007 and a handfull of other components such as switches and LEDs that again are standalone models.
Yes they are used elsewhere but not edited in context.
This is the only assembly that shows the rebuild assembly icon that I know of.

Did you dig through the subassembly and do a force rebuild on all of the parts?

Yes, I've opened all the part models and checked everything I can think of.
All have fully defined sketches, no rebuild errors or dangling or broken relations.
When I open the assembly on its own there is no rebuild problem or any other indication of a mate discrepancy or anything amiss in any of its three configurations. It is only when I insert this assembly as a sub into another I am presented with the rebuild assy icon.
Hence my question to see if this situation has been seen by anyone else.

I back-tracked through my emails with Optis tech support when I was having issues and I was on SW2011 SP3. Any chance you can download the newer SP for SW2011 and see if that helps you out? Are you running any add-ins?

You might try opening every file in the chain from the top level assembly down to the part in question so that all are resident in memory. Make sure all items are set to resolved all the way down. Then try your forced rebuild - backwards from the part up through the chain.
We occasionally have some similar issues and often the fix will be as above. In some situations, SW can't seem to touch all the things it needs to unless they are all open and in memory.

Harold: No longer on subscription so my colleague and I have to stay with SW2011 SP3 for now at least.
The only Add-ins are PV360, Toolbox, PDMWorks and 3D control.
Dean & Dan: I tried as you suggested, including going through the part configurations.(It took a while...) It made no difference.
The only way I can drop the rebuild assy icon is to save as a new file, delete the suppressed components, dissolve the assembly into the higher one. Then create a new sub assy from the parts.
It is not what I want to do.
It seems that I will have to live with the icon as it is.

I ran into this issue in 2013 sp.3. Not sure of the cause for the error but I dissolved the subassembly and reinserted it into a new subassembly and it seemed to fix it. Even if you suppress all the parts in the subassembly the error will not go away.
I am currenlty having this problem. Did anyone find a good solution to this other than re-doing the enitre subassembly like Adrian? Anyone know what is causing it?

Double check that you have checked out all the files in the file tree that need updating.
I just had this issue and I found I had a sub assembly with an unsaved change deeper down that I didn't check out. When I went to rebuild the higher level assembly Solidworks re-builds everything except for things in that assembly tree. So you may just need to expand the tree more and make sure you aren't missing a file deeper down.
In SW 2017 you can click on the error in the check in pop up box and it will tell you which files are the ones which are needing updates.
I know this is old, but I found this thread while searching for a solution since I had the same issue. After messing around with my assembly I found what fixed it for me. My sub assembly had 2 configurations and I noticed that when I switched to the other config which had less parts, the traffic light went away. So I decided to unsuppress everything in the smaller configuration (mates and all) and make it just like the default that had the traffic light, and when I did that, I did not get a traffic light, even though both configs were now identical. So I made a new config called "Defaulted", switched all my views on my drawing to point to that, checked it back in, reopened, deleted the Default config, and renamed Defaulted to Default and now it's all good. Hope this helps.
So I had this problem with a part that had external references. Tried everything I could think of. Eventually, I opened the part with the persisting build icon, right-clicked it -> External References, then closed the window. Did a rebuild, and the icon disappeared!
I don't know why this worked, and I almost want the icon back because this doesn't make sense lol.
Anyway, I'm glad its gone at the moment.
We run into this occasionally as well. What causes it though I'm not sure.
