Flattening a rolled part with extrusions

Hi there

I have a part which is a rolled sheet and it's got some extrusions along the width of it. I need to create holes between the strips before the part is rolled. This is in reality, 2 separate parts (the rolled sheet and the individual strips which are tangentially welded the the rolled sheet) but for the sake of simplicity, I've incorporated the extrusion into the rolled sheet to make the whole thing, one individual part.

My problem is that I can not flatten the part so that I could creat the holes equally between the extrusions so I was wondering If anyone could help me with this issue, please?

all sheet metal must be a cosistent thickness if you want to flatten it. you will need to split the part if you want to unfold it.

Thanks but this has not resolved the problem because when I flatten the part, the extrusions disappear again!

Are the extrudes all individual and identical parts??

Do you have the hole pattern dimensions?

Hi John,

Yes they are. There are 6 holes of 40mm Dia and 100mm offset from the left side of the rolled sheet (looking at the rear view) , equally spaced at 200mm apart.

what are the holes for? do they need to be perfectly round?

Just for drainage. No they don't need to be perfectly round

then i would suggest creating reference planes between the extrutions and using that for your sketches. something like this.

I contacted the Solidowrks support line and they even said that it can not be done as easily as I expect it to because of the face that the part isn't of constant thickness but as you suggested, someone might come up with a better and more efficient way of solving this problem later, however I did not know about the "Split" feature which could have helped me in the past with other problems so thanks for that as well.
