Is there an easy and fast way to create mulitple layer folder structure in PDM workgroup?
Example: Parent folder > folder 1
How do you do it now? The easiest way I know of is through the PDM Vault Admin.
We created a template that will do this for our projects. When a new project comes in, a person in sales will click on the project template and populate key variables into the card - customer name, address, PO number, project number, etc. That will then create a complex indented folder structure (about 50 folders) for several departments to use. Each have their own type of permissions with top level variables cascading throughout.
This was with Enterprise. Not sure if you can do it in Workgroup.
I am using PDM WorkGroup not Enterprise, does this matter? Do you have an example of this template? How does it work?
I don't believe you can create templates in Workgroup but not sure. Maybe someone else or your VAR can answer that one. If it can't then this would be another good reason to get Enterprise.
Depending on your needs, creating a template is done by the admin and is relatively easy but could be a little tedious if overly complex with variables. Using it is a matter of a right mouse click and then selecting it in the drop down. Fill in the form (card) with any information that you want and that is it. Very simple to use.
WorkGroup does not have these templates. To have anything created automatically you need to write a program through the API. When I create one or a few projects I just do it through the vault Admin program.
You'll have to create the top level folders in the VaultAdmin tool first. Then go to SolidWorks and the Vault interface and right click on the top level folder and select Create Sub-project. It will inherit the permissions of the top level folder, so make sure you set those first as well.
Also, the folder names will have to unique throughout the vault so don't expect to put a "Parts" folder, for isntance, in multiple places
This is the only way to create folders unless you do a batch import which will create folders for you - but I don't think that's what you're asking here.
Yes a batch process is what I'm looking for. I am setting up a new vault and have lots of project folders with sub folders to create
You might able to use the Bulk Check in tool in the VaultAdmin > Projects tab. There's an option to create sub-projects, but I'm not sure how it will work for your scenario. If you have files to check in, then this should work. If you just have folders to create, I don't think it will work.
Best bet is to explore - you can always do a small sample, review and decide if it will work for everything.
