    PDM Testimonials

    Benjamin Walker

      Hello again guys and gals,

Believe it or not, I actually don't have a question this time.

I'm trying to convince my superiors to purchase the PDM Add-In for SolidWorks. I know and realize how important it is, but when it comes to spending money, how I feel about it doesn't really mean much. We're a medical device company, and we're constantly having file troubles. Stuff getting moved, overwritten, changed, lost...

So I'm hoping to fill this thread with comments from people that have made the switch (or have always had it) and show it to my boss(es). Anything positive will help, if there are any special occasions where PDM has just made a world of difference, please do tell.

      Thanks everyone

If your supervisors do not believe you, most likely they will not believe anyone else.

Your best bet to convince them is to gather hard data. Document each instance of an issue you encounter that would be solved with a PDM solution. How much time was spent correcting the issue? If manufacturing made something to the wrong revision, how much did it cost for the scraped parts?

Luckily it's not that they don't believe me, they just hate spending money. My immediate boss recognizes the problem, it's just a matter of convincing the man with the money I suppose. I'll have to try logging each "incident" along with the time and what not. Good idea, just had a "missing link" for a drawing yesterday.

                  Well then, for example:

We implemente EPDM last year, and restructured our workflow to enable a paperless environment. We cut the release time from up to 2 weeks, to no more than 2 days. and we cut 80% of our paper waste. Just to name a couple of the benefits.

We do from 2 to 8 releases a day... Time is money!

I kind of agree with Wayne, the software can sure bring you great benefit and a boatload of time and money savings. The issue here is that if the people in charge don't want to change things, than no matter what tool you present they'll just see the "bad" things like the time it will take to Implement, Train, and Maintain a PDM System.

I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm just saying (like Wayne mentioned). you need to sell them the problem first, then the solution.
