U-joint won't flex in next-level assembly

I have a u-joint that is a subassembly.  The elements of the u-joint are mated such that each piece is free to rotate along the joint pin axes in the subassembly.  When I position the u-joint in the next level assembly I can no longer rotated the joint ends.  How do I get SW to not "freeze" the joint in the what ever orientation I flex it to in the subassembly when going up to the next level assembly?
