I have a parts file in solidwork and when i click an area only that area is selected (as in that part) but I want it so that when I click any area the whole device is selected. Can I do that?
It sounds to me that what you are seeing is that the face that you click on is what's highlighting, which is normal. If you want to select the whole body, then turn on the body filter (F5 to display the filter toolbar) and that same click will then select the whole body.
or go to the tree and how the solidbody folder, expand it and click on the body in it and whala whole body picked or just click the name of the part at the top of the tree.
If you try selecting from the feature manager either the entire body by selecting the file name at the top, the body in the bodies folder or the main feature this should give you what you are looking for.
I have the same problem. I want to combine all the parts in an assembly into a single part so that it is only one line in the indented BOM. I have used the instructions in "Creating a Joined Part" in help (SW2012). Everything works fine until step 7 where it says, "Click Insert, Features, Join." My Insert pull-down has no Features in it. I've joined before, so I know it used to work.
Dave make sure you in part edit mode in the assembly to get the Join option in Insert > Feature.
