Larry is correct, and I agree that it is more problems than worth. If you install the "service" on your local machine, it will have to be on all the time for you guys to access the vault. The service is very small an will not affect you server at all. I recommend you keep them both on the server and install vault admin on your computer. It's really the best choice.
Make sure you plan out how you want files to go into the vault and test out a few things before you go live with it. A little planning and asking questions will go a long way to set up a smooth vault.

It is possible and there should be a solution on how to do it in the KB.
However, I’ve seen that scenario cause more trouble than it is worth.
If you keep the SolidWorks Workgroup PDM Service and its vaultdata directory on the same host; you can still administer it from your Client machine, by modifying your install of SolidWorks, SolidWorks Explorer to include the “SolidWorks Workgroup PDM VaultAdmin” tool.
